FAQ Friday: Do I have to get naked for a massage?

If you have never had a massage before, you may be wondering, "Do I have to take off all of my clothes to get a massage?" It's a common question. The answer is no.

I always encourage my clients to undress to their comfort level, because your comfort is crucial to having a great massage experience! For some that means taking everything off, for some it means leaving everything on, and for others it's somewhere in between. Women will usually remove their bras so that I have access to their entire back but I have done many massages with a bra or sports bra left on. Some people are comfortable wearing long underwear or gym shorts; others wear briefs, thongs, or remove their underwear.

If your areas of compliant are low back, glutes, hamstrings, or quads, you might consider removing underwear or wearing something on the shorter side. If your back is bothering you, removing a shirt or bra will allow for lotion all over your back (without getting lotion on your clothes). I have also massaged people who prefer to remain completely clothed. If that is your preference, you might consider Thai massage, which is performed fully clothed.

Regardless of how much clothing you choose to remove, you will always be properly draped in accordance with the regulations set by the NC Board of Massage & Bodywork Therapy (https://bmbt.org). You will be covered in a way that ensures your safety, comfort, and security. If at any time you are uncomfortable, I encourage you to let me know how I can make you more comfortable.
